Who I Am And Why I Care

My name is Queenie Reda and I am clinician, researcher, and a mom to an incredible human. I am also a member of the Asian community, and I deeply recognize the cultural views of mental health and the stigma around treatment.

As a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor (LCADC), I have worked in the field of mental health for over a decade. My areas of focus are the underserved and under resourced populations, particularly Asian communities struggling with mental health challenges and substance use disorder and the underutilization of treatment and scarce treatment retention. I recently concluded my qualitative research: What Motivates South Asian Female Emerging Adults to Seek Formal Mental Health Treatment?

Like you, I have experienced barriers within my Asian communities. Similar to those of South Asian descent, it can be very difficult to start a conversation about our questions, struggles, and experiences regarding mental health, especially when it is not a topic of discussion in the household.

Many of you may have a difficult time speaking with family about mental health challenges, I have had these struggles too. This difficulty leads to a silence about the conflicts with your emotional wellness. My aim is around empowering you, I want to help you connect with treatment, so that your voice is lifted.
